Okay, I have to tell y’all something. You won’t make regular mashed potatoes again after you make these smashed potatoes. They are just too dad gum easy!

And good.

And comforting.

And everything you love about a mashed potato without all that work peeling them.

I have to tell you how these came about. I was newly married and wanted to make mashed potatoes one night for my new husband. I came home late from work and without really thinking threw the red potatoes in the pot to boil. I came back about 15 minutes later to discover what I’d done. It was too late to doing anything about it at that point, so I just thought I’d have to make the best of it.

Oh my word, my thoughtless mistake turned into one of the best things I’d married since we’d gotten married.

And almost 16 years later, it is still how I like to make them.

Boil your red potatoes until they are extremely tender, about 30 minutes.

Smash them with your potato masher, but don’t worry about getting them really finely mashed.

Rustic and lumpy should come to mind when you make them.

Now add in your butter and let it begin to melt into your potatoes.

Add in salt and pepper.

And your milk.

And then just stir until it is all well combined.

Simple Smashed Potatoes Recipe

This Smashed Potatoes recipe makes one of my favorite potatoes recipes. So easy and everyone loves these simple smashed potatoes!

Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients 

  • 2 pounds red potatoes, scrubbed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions 

  • Place red potatoes in a large pan and cover with water.
  • Bring to a boil and cook for 20-25 minutes until very tender.
  • Remove from heat and drain remaining water from the potatoes.
  • Using a potato masher, begin to mash potatoes, but do not mash until smooth.
  • Add in butter, salt, pepper, and milk. Stir until all is well-combined.
  • Serve warm.

  1. We really love mashed potatoes – they compliment just about anything you serve as a main course, don’t they? I’ve always preferred the waxier texture of red potatoes to the more mealy ones. Just so much more pleasant in my mouth. And I always leave the peel on. I mean, I have to really, really love you to peel a potato for you 🙂
