These Southern Baked Beans really go so perfectly with so many dishes I serve during this season – like grilled chicken, hamburgers, and everything in between – that they are somewhat of a regular occurrence around here.

Now that the weather has teased us with bits of spring for a couple of weeks, I’ve loved being outside as much as possible. Whether I’m outside playing with Ranger and Miss Annabelle or checking in on things around the farm, it really is my favorite place to be. So, I was thrilled to death when I was asked to plan my perfect picnic by BlogHer and Kettle Brand.

Y’all know by now that I am all about simple living – which includes simple, yet delicious recipes. Even though cooking and entertaining are my favorite things to do, I still believe simplicity is the best.

He was host for another Scout group at the hangar for a few activities and since he wasn’t responsible for anything other than the facility, we decided it would be a great time to test out a few things we had in mind.

This Gumbo is now one of our favorite recipes.

This past weekend, my husband hosted another Scout group (not Little Buddy’s group) at the hangar for their rain gutter regatta and space derby. Since we weren’t in charge of the actual Scout group, we decided it would be an excellent time to try a new recipe (which I’ll be sharing with you tomorrow).

I also knew that I wanted to make this Blueberry Cobbler for dessert. Not only is this recipe fantastic when made conventionally at home, it is absolutely amazing when you cook it at a campsite.

Little Buddy had wrapped up school for the year, I was in the mood to start celebrating Mother’s Day, and there was a promise of sunshine for at least part of the weekend.

Hosting a Cheese Judging Party is a great way to spend time with friends while learning so much about cheese. A while back when I visited the Cracker Barrel headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, I was able to learn a few tips first hand from an acclaimed cheese judge, Virg. I knew the tips I learned would be something friends of ours would be interested in learning and that you’d love to know them as well.

So many times, I pull together a cheese board and serve wine and other drinks when entertaining, but until I spent time with the experts at Cracker Barrel, I really didn’t realize the proper way to assemble a full cheese board paired with appropriate wines or other beverages. I certainly didn’t understand how to host a cheese judging party until then. I knew by the end of the first afternoon during my visit that my friends would love to have the same information I’d just learned so they would understand the complexities that come into play. I knew that once they’d learned to judge cheese as I had, it would elevate their cheese experiences from that point forward as it had mine.
