One of my biggest fears is losing precious pictures that are stored on our computers. You know the ones, the photographs you snap of your children building Lego models, playing at the beach, or even just everyday moments that you captured. I also want to be sure to have access to important records for our family. Marriage and birth certificates that I’ve scanned, a copy of our will and insurance papers, tax records, home school records, and even just everyday documents and projects for our family. While we have the paper copies of these documents, I love having them electronically as well.

For the last couple of months, I have been testing a Drobo 2nd generation 4-Bay SATA Storage Array Solution (we call her Dorothy).

My box containing Dorothy arrived on a Tuesday and I just stared at it. My husband was out of town and I just knew that setting it up would require his technical assistance. Technical equipment is not my forte by any means.

Finally, I decided on Thursday morning that if I were really going to provide a thorough review of the product, I needed to do it myself! No depending on my technical-savvy husband allowed!

I opened up the box and removed the instruction card and decided that even I could do this! You know what? It really was as easy as 1, 2, 3!

I installed the drives into the slots and connected Dorothy to my computer.

Then I started Dorothy up and followed the instructions on the screen. Within 10 minutes, Dorothy was ready to go and started working away on my backup.

But she is so much more than just an external backup solution. This is a 4-Bay Drobo that I installed 3, 2 terabyte drives. My data is written across all three drives allowing me to relax knowing that if one of the drives fails my data still resides on the other two drives! Also, if I run out of space on the 3 drives that I have installed now, I can insert a fourth drive or even “hot-swap” to a larger drive.

My husband returned home from his trip and saw Dorothy with her green lights just a smiling as she sat on my desk in the office.

I think he was impressed.
