Growing up, as soon as September rolled around on the calendar, you could count on my family making plans to drive up into the Blue Ridge mountains as often as we could.

Mama loved to stop by the various roadside spots along the way to buy hot boiled peanuts that were ladled from a huge piping hot  drum where they’d been cooking all night and day. And of course at the best spots to buy our boiled peanuts would always be fresh apple cider. You could buy it by the glass, by the half gallon or gallon and we’d always have to have a glass for the road to drink as we snacked on our boiled peanuts.

On our way back home, we’d stop by another roadside stand for apple cider to take home with us since Daddy firmly believed there was nothing as delicious as apple cider made in the mountains. In the evenings, Mama would heat it and pour into mugs for us all after supper, especially if the night was really chilly.

I can’t sip apple cider without those memories flooding back and I do my best to continue them in my own family. Sometimes, I even add a special little twist to my Homemade Apple Cider Recipe by adding a bit of caramel.

I’m thinking I need to plan a trip to the mountains sooner rather than later. Those roadside stands are calling my name.

Here’s how I make my Caramel Apple Cider recipe. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
