We’d rush through our baths, barely drying off in a hurry to get our nightgowns and slippers on and back downstairs before it started. Mama would have made supper early so that our night wouldn’t be “interrupted” and we could find our favorite spots in front of the television before the first scenes of the movie came on. We’d waited for weeks to be able to see our favorite holiday show – whether it was Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas.
I saw a commercial this week for It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! I started thinking of how times have changed. From those {ahem} many years ago of the days we waited anxiously for that one special cartoon to come on our wooden-encased television with silver rabbit ears to the days of instant gratification of pulling the DVD off the shelf any time of the year to watch as much and as often as we choose.
This afternoon, I asked my son what he wanted to do after we finished school. He replied with his famous side ways grin and said, “Can we watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?
I noticed that as I pulled the movie up on the computer, he hurriedly got a snack, a blanket, and snuggled up beside me in his favorite spot on the sofa. I guess times really haven’t changed as much as I originally thought. The thrill of watching these classics just changes with the times.
What were your favorite holiday movies growing up? Are they now your children’s favorites, too?
I LOVE Charlie Brown! I remember being just *sick* if we happened to miss the Great Pumpkin or the Christmas Special…and having to WAIT until the next year!!!
I remember that feeling! I was just thinking about this with Wizard of Oz too. What a big deal it as when that one came on. And yes, all these holiday ones. I just bought the 3-pack of all the Peanuts holiday shows b/c I couldn’t bear to miss DVRing them…and here you remind me I could’ve just watched on YouTube! LOL
It is a different world. But the laughter I heard come out of my kids mouths was still the same as when I was a kid.
I watched it the other night too (not ‘watched’ exactly but had it on while cooking dinner) I would never think of missing such a classic. The other holiday special I simply can’t miss no matter what is Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer with Burl Ives as Sam the snowman. Nothing beats it for ringing in each Christmas season. Guess I’m still a kid at heart!
I can remember it like it was yesterday. Such sweet memories. Mine still like to watch the old shows when we can catch them too. Nothing beats them!
