Keep on the Sunny Side

As my Grandmother would work in her home, she normally had the radio or a record playing. The music would vary from classic bluegrass tunes, to gospel greats, to good ole country songs. She’d hum or sing along to the infectious tunes and encourage my sister and me to dance around and sing as we helped her during our summers. Her ottoman became the stage and the feather duster transformed itself into our microphones. I’m not sure how much cleaning we would accomplish, but we definitely had a great time.

One of our favorite songs she’d play over and over was “Keep it on Sunny Side,” by The Carters. I hadn’t heard it in years, until this weekend when I heard it playing. If you’ve never heard the song, or if it has been a while, I’ve included the lyrics for ya.

Keep on the Sunny Side Lyrics

by Ada Blenkhorn, 1899

Well there’s a dark and a troubled side of life. There’s a bright and a sunny side too. But if you meet with the darkness and strife, The sunny side we also may view.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side, Keep on the sunny side of life. It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way, If we keep on the sunny side of life.

Oh, the storm and its fury broke today, Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear. Clouds and storms will in time pass away. The sun again will shine bright and clear.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side, Keep on the sunny side of life. It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way, If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life.

Let us greet with a song of hope each day. Though the moments be cloudy or fair. Let us trust in our Saviour always, To keep us, every one, in His care.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side, Keep on the sunny side of life. It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way, If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life.

If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life.

Aren’t those lyrics beautiful?

I think I’ll start listening to it more often.

I also created a printable that I’m going to frame for my house!

Would you like one?

I made it in a few different colors so you can pick your favorite.

  1. I love it! I think I’d love your Granny too. 🙂

I read something this week that has stuck in my mind. Some guy said if we acted more like a dog that wags his tail we’d be better people. Meet someone? wag your tail – or smile if that works better. LOL

I’m going to be so sunny by next week you won’t recognize me.

  2. There is such a great message in that song. I think everyone would be more pleasant to be around if we all would be more sunny! Thank you for sharing the song and the printable!!!!

  3. I love the printable and the song, Robyn. Thank you so much for sharing such a sweet childhood memory. I love it when stories and music take us back in time. Just beautiful!

  4. I haven’t heard that song is so long…you’re right, great lyrics! Happy Sunny Monday, Robyn!

  5. Great words/advice! Have a great week and thx for hosting. I linked up a yummy quiche w/ asparagus, chicken and pecan. Probably the best flavor combo I have ever had in a quiche!

  6. Keeping on the sunny side is something I’ve actually been struggling to do lately, but it is such good advice! 🙂
