Our Favorite Buttermilk Waffles Recipe

Our favorite buttermilk waffles are crisp on the outside, yet tender and fluffy on the inside. This is the buttermilk waffle recipe I turn to again and again!
Buttermilk waffles make a classic breakfast, brunch, or even “breakfast for dinner” for so many families. In my house, this has always been our favorite buttermilk waffles recipe and they are one of my son Sam’s absolute favorite foods!
When he was two, we celebrated his birthday with a family camping trip in the mountains with a huge waffle breakfast! All of our family, including aunts, uncles and cousins came along for the weekend where I served this waffle recipe on a much larger scale to feed all 30-something of us!
Before that big birthday weekend, I worked on perfecting my buttermilk waffle recipe to make sure that it was absolutely the best it could be and one that Sam loved. Never growing tired of being my taste-tester, Sam proclaimed the final version the winner. I’m sharing that winning recipe with you and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

How to Make Buttermilk Waffles
This recipe produces buttery, light and fluffy waffles that have that perfectly crisp outside that we love. They practically melt in your mouth! To make them, you’ll need:
- All-purpose flour
- kosher salt
- sugar
- baking powder
- baking soda
- buttermilk – or make your own buttermilk substitute
- egg
- butter
- vanilla – or your favorite vanilla extract
Start by whisking your flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda in a medium mixing bowl. Set aside.
Whisk the buttermilk, egg, melted butter and vanilla in a 2 cup measuring cup or small bowl.
Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and mix until just combined.
Then pour your waffle mixture into your heated waffle iron and cook according to your waffle iron’s instructions.
Serve and enjoy with your favorite fruit or warm maple syrup. Delicious!
Make Waffles for a Crowd
I’ve shared the much larger scale of this recipe, my Large Batchย Buttermilk Waffles Recipe for a Crowd, previously that works perfectly for serving a large crowd or making ahead and freezing to make mornings even easier!
Make Ahead and Freeze: To freeze, just place a few waffles in a zip-top freezer bag and close, being sure to get as much air out of the bag as possible.
Then when you are ready to serve them, just pull what you need out of your freezer bag and place in your toaster oven. Youโll have delicious, homemade scratch buttermilk waffles ready in minutes!
The Best Buttermilk Waffles
A while back when we were out of town, we stopped by a restaurant for brunch and Sam ordered a double stack of waffles with maple syrup. After he’d dug in and scarfed down his first few bites, he sat back and looked at me and said, “these are good, but Mama, your’s are still my favorite. They are the best!”
Here’s Our Favorite Buttermilk Waffles Recipe. I think you’ll love them, too!

I’m so happy your mother loved these waffles, Halle.
I needed a new waffle recipe. My boys are so tired of mine, so thank you!
Hi Matt!
I hope those cute boys enjoy these waffles! They are growing up so fast! My teenage son (and all his friends) has loved these for years! Thanks! ๐
These waffles turned out great! My husband and I had them for dinner this evening. I loved how they were crisp and yet still tender. We even made extra waffles to freeze for a quick breakfast. Thanks for sharing your family’s favorite waffle recipe!
