Homemade fruit leather, or fruit roll-ups, made of dried pureed fruit makes a healthy, delicious treat and a great way to use fruit.

Making homemade fruit leather makes a great way to use excess fruit while providing nutritious snacks that everyone just loves. In just a few simple steps, you have your own fruit leather than you can then make into homemade fruit roll-ups that I loved so much when I was a kid. There was just nothing like pulling that sweet treat away from the parchment paper for a snack in the afternoons after school or during lunch from my lunchbox. I loved that Mama would make them and tuck them away for me.

It just takes a few simple steps to make fruit leather at home and begin playing with your favorite combinations of flavors!

Just toss your fruit into a food processor or blender and puree until smooth.

Then pour onto the mat for your dehydrator shelf or onto a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper.

Pop the shelf into your dehydrator or the baking sheet into the oven. Then, once it has dehydrated, you’ll allow to cool and then roll up your fruit leather to store as one large piece or cut your fruit leather and parchment into strips for fruit roll-ups.

I love to pack these away for our family camping trips or when my husband and son are off on a Scouting trip. There’s just something about knowing that I sent these with them. And… that way, I’m not nearly as tempted to eat them all!

Here’s my homemade fruit leather recipe.

Homemade fruit leather, or fruit roll-ups, made of dried pureed fruit makes a healthy, delicious treat and a great way to use fruit.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 4 hours
Total Time: 4 hours 5 minutes
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds fresh fruit, washed and deseed if necessary
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar, honey or maple syrup, to taste (optional)

Instructions 

  • If using an oven, preheat to 200º F. Line a baking sheet pan with a silicon baking mat or parchment paper. Set aside.
  • If using a dehydrator, place parchment paper or dehydrator mats on shelves. Set aside.
  • Add fresh fruit to a blender or food processor and puree. Add sweetener, if needed. Pour contents into a medium saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fruit puree has thickened and reduced to about 2 cups.
  • Pour pureed fruit onto prepared pans or shelves, spread into a thin layer with an offset spatula. If using an oven, place into oven for 3 1/2 – 4 hours until the fruit leather is just barely tacky and lifts easily from the parchment. If using a dehydrator, set the temperature accordingly, and the timer for 5 – 6 hours, checking and adjusting time as needed.
  • To store: Cut strips into 2-inch pieces, along with parchment, and roll into fruit roll-ups. Tie with kitchen twine, if needed and store in a zip top storage back for up to a month. Alternately, you can roll the entire piece of fruit leather into a large roll and store the same.
