Shrimp and Grits

Few recipes come together as quickly as shrimp and grits. I generally have all of these ingredients on hand in my pantry or in my freezer and within minutes, we have a hot, delicious dish that rivals any I’ve enjoyed at a restaurant.

As a matter of fact, these shrimp and grits come together so quickly, I sometimes serve them for lunch if we’ve been stuck in a “what’s for lunch?” rut. Do you ever get into one of those ruts? Well, this recipe will surely get you right out of it!

Here’s how I make it.

Shrimp and Grits

Ingredients

  • 1 pound shrimp
  • 10 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 cups grits
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Chop bacon and cook on medium heat until browned.
  2. Add in chopped onion and cook until tender.
  3. Remove from skillet.
  4. Boil 4 cups water and add grits.
  5. Cook about 5 minutes on medium, add in half and half, butter, and shredded cheese.
  6. Remove from heat and cover.
  7. Add shrimp to skillet used to cook bacon and onions.
  8. Cook 3 minutes on one side and then turn.
  9. Add bacon and onion mixture back to the skillet and add in minced garlic.
  10. Cook 3 additional minutes.

Mmmm, I had my first Shrimp & Grits in Tuscaloosa this summer and it was everything I thought it would be and more! Mine had sausage in them though, but i’d happily take bacon too!
I may need to make this for myself!

It is great with sausage, too but I my favorite includes that bacon. Can’t go wrong with bacon! :)

I love grits and feel so sorry for my husband who never grew up with them. He also doesnt like shrimp or crawdaddies. But that’s okay…more for me.

This sounds so good (even to a non-southern gal like me). Bacon, shrimp, cheese -what’s not to like?

Of course this through-and-through Southerner loves shrimp and grits! So easy and so delicious. They’re always a big hit at brunch.

I have been dying for this dish since seeing it tweeted. My 10 years in the south is calling me home with shrimp with grits! I need to find some good grits though, they are most certainly not a Denver staple!

Yum! I really wish my husband liked shrimp… I will have to make this when he isn’t around :)

I love shrimp & grits! Too bad my hubby doesn’t…but that just means there’s more for me. ;-)

Count me in, Robyn, on this superb version of one of my favorite comfort foods. I’m going to suggest to my husband that he skip buying chocolates for Valentine’s Day today and make this instead. Oh boy!
