French Onion Dip Recipe from addapinch.com

Mother always made homemade meals, dips, sauces, and other dishes as much as possible. She’d be in the kitchen stirring something together for what seemed like seconds and then, voila, she’d have the most delicious dishes on the table for breakfast, lunch and supper. She has always been known for her dips and appetizers for parties and showers, one of which was her French onion dip.

I’ll never forget in when I was in college, I invited a few friends over to my apartment for the afternoon and then supper. I didn’t have a whole lot, but had saved up to be able to provide the main course and asked my friends if they could bring any appetizers. It was at that point that I learned that French onion dip also came in a can! Gosh, I felt like I must have lived under a rock and couldn’t wait to taste it to see how it compared to the dip I’d grown up eating that Mama made. While it was good, it didn’t hold a candle to her rich, thick dip.

Recently, I was in the grocery store at the lake with Little Buddy picking up a few things for the weekend. He had a few friends that were staying with us over the weekend and we’d discussed making sure we had plenty of snacks for all of the guys since I knew they’d be hungry after a day playing on the lake. As we went to pick up a bag of chips, there sat a can of that French onion dip. He reached for it and said, “Mama, did you know they made this dip in a can?” I laughed and said, “Oh yes! But, if you want that, I can make it for you and your friends if you’d like.”

I’m not sure I should’ve said that. Maybe I should’ve just let them enjoy the ready to go version so that unlike me, he could experience it well before his college years. But, on the other hand, there sure is something about stirring together that homemade dip and watching them enjoy every single bite.

I love your recipe, never would have thought to add cumin. Also, I think my husband will ask me to do double the caramelized onions.
