But you know, as serious as some people take pulled pork around here, this really is about as simple of a recipe as you can get.

Thankfully, the slow cooker does all the work for you. You simply add a few ingredients, set the timer, and sit back and relax. Or, if you are like me, you attempt to catch up on laundry and all the other eleven-billionty other things you have on your to-do list that haven’t been checked off yet.

I think I like the relax idea a whole lot better.

I love that this chipotle root beer pulled pork recipe only includes three ingredients, too. Talk about the simplest! But, be prepared for the most amazing smells coming from your kitchen all day long. Likewise, if you are out of the house all day, you’ll be pleasantly greeted as you open the door.   • 1 4 pound pork shoulder
  • 1 12-ounce can root beer
  • 1 7-ounce can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce


  • Place pork shoulder into slow cooker and pour in root beer. Cook on low setting for 8 hours or until pork shreds easily when pulled with two forks. Drain all but 1/2 cup root beer from slow cooker.
  • Pour can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce into blender and blend for about 10 seconds. Pour into the slow cooker with the pork and stir to combine well.

  1. This looks so good (love the onions on top!) I made PW Dr. Pepper pulled pork last week. I will definately make this next time. I can’t put the whole can of peppers in as my hubby can’t eat heat, but I took out 3/4 of them and it worked well in PW recipe.

      The pork was cooked in the slow cooker. I use the Hamilton Beach 6-qt slow cooker and it always seems to produce edges like that.

    New to your blog… Quick question… the most common size for Chipotle in Adobo Sauce is 7oz (there are some 11oz cans as well). Did you really mean 12oz? That would be a lot of heat.

  5. I want to make this for our family, but I’m the only one who likes spicy food. Is this pretty spicy when finished, or does the root beer temper the heat of the chipotle/adobo sauce? I’m assuming it’s a bit hot.

    1. Hi Ann,
      While the root beer does temper it a bit, it is still spicy. I would recommend removing all of the actual chipotle peppers except maybe one while cooking. That should even further reduce the spice.

  6. I’ve never made pulled pork before but this recipe sounded delicious. I bought the ingredients and plan on making it tomorrow… But I have a question, Do add the peppers after the pork is already cooked and shredded kind of as a sauce or do you cook the pepper in with the pork?

  7. I ran across a similar simple recipe for pulled pork which called for “your favorite BBQ sauce” instead of the chipotle peppers. While that came out just fine, I like me some heat, so I’ll definitely be trying this recipe. Thank you, Robyn!
