Italian Seasoning Mix makes a great seasoning mix to keep on hand. A delicious savory addition to so many Italian dishes, from spaghetti to lasagna or to sprinkle on chicken! Such an essential homemade seasoning mix for the pantry!

Dried herbs and spices are on a white plate, surrounded by measuring spoons.

I love preparing my own homemade seasoning mixes. They are perfect because they only take a few minutes to mix together, and I know what ingredients they have in them (unlike the prepackaged ones in the grocery store). I can also easily customize them to my tastes. This Italian Seasoning Mix is just one example of the homemade seasoning mixes that I like to make and keep on hand!

Made with just a few ingredients that you most likely already have on hand, it makes cooking so much easier on those busy weeknights! Add it to chicken as it bakes, sprinkle a bit in spaghetti sauce while it simmers, and even quickly add to vegetables for additional flavor as they cook. You can also use this in place of the garlic and other spices in my easy homemade Italian Dressing recipe. It comes together in a snap!

How to Make Italian Seasoning Mix

Italian Seasoning Mix all blended together in a glass jar.

When I make it, I make sure to make enough to have a good little supply to get me through a few months. Since I’m using all dried spices and seasonings, it is shelf-stable in the pantry as long as any of your other opened spices would be. Of course, I go through mine pretty quickly!

Ingredients

Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.

  • basil
  • oregano
  • thyme
  • rosemary
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • salt – You may choose to omit the salt in the seasoning mix and simply salt your dishes to taste once prepared.
  • red pepper flakes (optional) – If you like adding a little heat to yours, you can include a bit of red pepper flakes. I usually do not add this to my mix as I prefer to add the red pepper separately to dishes based on what I’m making.
Measuring spoons, glass container surround dried herbs and spices on a white plate waiting to mix to make Italian Seasoning Mix.

Freshness Tips

Choose a glass container with a lid that fits well for best results. Some examples are small Mason or Ball jelly or spice jars, glass jars with lids with a seal, glass jars with glass lids, and metal hinge closures.

Don’t use old dried spices and herbs to make this mix. Start with new or somewhat freshly opened ingredients to make the seasoning mix so that it tastes fresh and delicious and keeps its fresh taste longer!

Label your spice mix jar! I have several more spice blend recipes I hope you try, so label all of your seasoning mixes with either a label maker or a piece of masking tape and a pen!

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Choose an appropriate-sized jar or container with a tight-fitting lid.
  2. Add all of the spices to the container, followed by the lid, and shake well to combine.

Storage Tips

  • Store the Italian Seasoning Mix in a jar or container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Keep the jar/container stored with your other spices in a spice cabinet or pantry away from heat and sunlight for best results.
  • When stored properly, the seasoning mix should remain fresh anywhere from 1-2 years, depending on the freshness of the spice ingredients used to make this blend. Watch for color fading in the dried leafy herbs as a guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to store spices in plastic or glass?

Glass storage jars seem to keep the spices fresher. They seem to get a better, more airtight seal.

Can you store spices in Mason jars?

Yes! You can use some of the smaller-sized jars with lids, and they should work perfectly. Jelly-size jars are a good size for seasoning mixes. The ring lids and tops will work fine to keep the spices fresh. There are also special spice lids made to fit these jars with shaker openings and such.

Here’s my homemade Italian Seasoning Mix recipe. I hope you love and use it as much as we do!

Love this recipe. I have a problem with all the ready made mixes that add too much salt so I love these that have been published for us to use and enjoy the foods we still love

Loved it! ย Used a mortar and pestle to grind up the spices, particularly the rosemary which can be a bit prickly if left whole.

  3. Cathy Hastings says:

How much oil and vinegar and spice mix would I need to make salad dressing? Thanks.ย

Sure, it will change the taste a bit from my recipe, but if you don’t like it you can omit. Thanks!

I like to make my own spice mix too. This I am definitely making this week. Love it.

  7. Ruth says:

This is an easy recipe that I can make since I have all these spices anyway!

Is there any reason the dried spices cannot be put into spice blender and pulverized? If they were fresh herbs and spices, I wouldn’t mind putting them directly into the pot, but as dried, I think I would like to pulverize them first to blend. I use powdered herbs and spices in bread dough often to punch up the flavors of the bread/pita.

    1. Robyn Stone says:

      Hi Gary,
You sure can! I hope you enjoy it!

LOVING this idea. . .and so easy, since most of us have these spices and more already in our spice cabinet ? I will definitely be trying this. . .Can’t think of one reason why this would be a 5-star recipe, as most are. โ˜บ๏ธ I come from a long line of Italian Cooks. One of my Husbands favorite stories to tell . . .is about Sunday’s at Grandma’s. His story is about the Pot of Spaghetti Meat Sauce cooking on the store. . .there was always a group sitting at the kitchen table and he was one. . .He would watch each of my aunt’s (grandma had 12 kids, 8 were girls, at least 5-6 were usually there) walk through the kitchen, stir and taste the sauce, then add a sprinkle of one spice or another. By dinner, it was amazing but don’t think anyone could really be exact on what was in it ? When I got married and my mom wrote down the recipe (or sort of recipe), I looked at her and said, really ?. . .she said sorry I can’t be more exact. . .but I did master it and then. . . Guess what? I did the same thing to my daughters ?
