Grilled Okra makes a delicious addition to any meal! Such a simple, yet scrumptious recipe to make grilled okra to enjoy anytime!
Grilled Okra has to be one of the simplest, yet most fabulous vegetables ever.
Seriously.
So amazingly easy to prepare and yet everyone just can’t get enough of it.
They’ll ask, “are you sure this is okra? Because, I don’t really like okra.” To which comes the reply, “yes, this is okra. It has just been grilled. Take one bite and then let me know what you think.”
Usually, those are the people that are eyeing the last piece of grilled okra on the plate wondering if they can snatch it before anyone realizes how many they’ve eaten. I
I know this to be true because I was one that didn’t like okra that much until I made them with this recipe.
Grilled Okra Recipe
Well, I take that back. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy any kind of okra. I do love my Grandmother’s and Mama’s Fried Okra recipe. But I just can’t eat raw, pickled or boiled okra. Boiled okra is just a weird thing to me.
But grilled okra on the other hand? I could eat it every single day of my life and be happy!
Thankfully, the rest of my family feels the same. I love that they totally enjoy something so good for them. It’s just so easy to make and absolutely delicious.
How to Make It
To make this recipe, you’ll need:
- Okra
- Olive Oil
- Salt
- Ground Black Pepper
- Cayenne Pepper (optional)
- Skewers or a grill basket
First, skewer the washed okra or place in a grill basket to prevent it from going through the grill grates while cooking. Then drizzle the okra with olive oil and place onto grill that has been preheated to around 450ยบ F.
Think about adding some grilled okra to your menu. You’ll be amazed at how perfect it is and how quickly it disappears.
They are perfect without a lot of fuss and adornment, but you can also serve them with a bit of Comeback Sauce on the side for dipping. That’s amazing!
But, whatever you do, do me a favor and buy more than you think you need. You’ll be glad you did.
What’s Good with Grilled Okra?
This is perfect served as a side for so many dishes, but I especially enjoy it served with grilled chicken legs, pulled pork sandwiches or even burgers!

I never thought I would like okra but this made it totally amazing. Even the kids were eating it and finished it off. Perfect just like it is!
It’s amazing that kids like grilled okra who wouldn’t touch it any other way, isn’t it? Thanks, Jennifer!
I always just make them Japanese style. So glad to find this recipe to make them on the bbq.
Thanks, T. So glad you like these.
I’ve been looking for different ways to cook okra, I usually add them to curries. This is something I will try. Thanks.
I hope you enjoy it Harriet! Thanks so much!
I lived in the North most of my life and didnโt eat okra until 5 years ago when we moved to TN. We had wonderful elderly neighbors who all were native Tennesseans, but my favorite were Georgia and Vincent, who are 86 and 92. Vince still does a little vegetable gardening and Georgia cooks up all the Southern dishes with those vegetables. Dishes I had never eaten. She fried potatoes, okra and onion and it was delicious, even my husband enjoys it. I will definitely try this recipe too.
You certainly had a treat in your kind neighbors with the southern roots! This recipe is great to make on the grill with so many other favorite dishes. If you enjoyed Fried Okra, this is how my grandmother taught me to make it many years ago. Absolutely delicious! Thanks so much, Patti!
I actually like okra, usually friend or in a gumbo type setting. CANT WAIT TO GRILL IT! NEVER ADDED THIS TO GRILLED VEGGIE LIST, THANK YOU, it is good for so many folks problems, all that fiber!! Fiber helps absorb fat, for dieters, sugar for diabetics, etc., And low sodium for the high blood pressure people in your group
Okra really is a nice addition to many a meal. I mostly use it as a gumbo thickener, but need to grab some for the grill next time!
