When the weather gets cooler, I love to sit by the fire with my family while we watch movies, read or play board games. It seems like we are just cocooned in time with our family of three all cozied up by the fire spending time together. I especially love to bring in a tray of homemade hot chocolate topped with a large dollop of whipped cream and a candy cane for good measure.
We go through quiet a bit of hot chocolate around my house to be perfectly honest. So much so that I turned to Martha Stewart’s recipe for homemade hot chocolate. It makes 92 eight-ounce servings of deliciousness, almost enough to get us through the winter. It makes a wonderful gift for family, friends, teachers, and neighbors over the holidays. One that they’ll definitely use and love. Pair it with a set of mugs and a few candy canes for an extra special touch.
It’s definitely a quick, simple recipe my family loves and we love to share.
Here’s how I make it.
A recipe for homemade hot chocolate mix.
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 1/4 cups cocoa
- 2 teaspoons salt

- Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container.
Per Serving:- Heat one cup of whole milk per serving.
- Mix in two tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and stir until dissolved.
Optional Add-ins:- Add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract for peppermint hot chocolate.
- Add 1 teaspoon peppermint schnapps for adult peppermint hot chocolate
- Add a pinch cinnamon for Mexican hot chocolate
- Mix with a hot cup of coffee instead of sugar or sugar substitute for a quick, homemade mocha flavored coffee

Absolutely! I did reduce the amount of salt from her original recipe. The original has 1 tablespoon of salt. I use 2 teaspoons instead.
That sounds perfect right about now!

What a cool recipe!! I love that you can put the mix together in advance, and that it makes so much of it!!
I am soooo way jealous of your fire and hot chocolate tray. Can I come over? It sounds so darn cozy.
What a great idea… Homemade hot cocoa usually means having to have ingredients on hand and long time stirring at the stove. I love that this is homemade, yet can be made in advance! Love this and am sharing it on my site’s FB and Twitter pages. Thanks for posting. Great idea to get us through winter. Have a great weekend!!

Hi Robyn nice to meet you and your delicious website ^_*

I love homemade coco!
Yummy. My mum would take a candy bar – Hershey’s bar , dark or milk, and break the bar in half ( The size you use to make s’mores with) and break the half up into smaller peices and put them in a cup ( this is one serving size) and head it up stovetop and melt the chocolate in the milk and add a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar and let it mix good, then serve it into a cup with marshmellow’s and maybe a peppermint stick to mix it with for a peppermint flavor in the hot chocolate.
Best chocolate recipe ever <3
NO CANDY CANES….This is just as delicious.
