Learn how to make your own seedling pots to jump start your gardening! An easy and economical way to start seeds for your garden!
Making your own seedling pots is a great afternoon activity for the entire family and a wonderful way to get children excited about gardening. With a stack of newspapers, a can or water bottle, and a few minutes, you’ll be ready to add your potting soil and seeds before you know it.
Start with a stack of newspapers. Little Buddy chose to start with the comics, of course. He had to spend a few minutes reading them again before we started making our pots.
Tear the paper into long strips.
Place your bottle about 3/4 of the width of the paper strip.
And roll.
Begin folding the end of the paper onto the bottom of the bottle.
Tuck the final pointed corner underneath the other folds for a tight finish.
Fill with your favorite potting soil, plant your seeds according to package directions, and be ready to enjoy your seedlings knowing you’ve not invested a ton of money in seedling pots!
Do you have a gardening tip to share?
Hey there Robyn!
Awesome idea!! ๐ I was wondering about how long do you let them set in your window?
what a cool idea…this may be a stupid question but – do you plant the newspaper cup as well?
thanks!
I do plant the newspaper seedling pot. It works like a charm!
Fabulous idea! Wish I would have seen these earlier. You’re so smart.
What a great family idea… and so useful! Those little seedling pots they have at the big box stores are way too expensive and never fit on my windowsill. This is perfect!
What a great DIY! My little guy will love making these. Can’t wait to make them with him.
I totally tried this a couple years ago with herbs but they all died, lol…I think I have a black thumb! Such a great activity to celebrate Earth Day!
This is so cute Robyn. You are very creative! Thanks for the weekend project idea for the kiddos.
Great idea, Robyn! I can’t wait until the weather warms up so I can take advantage of the idea.
This is a wonderful idea, Robyn. The weather is finally warming up here and we’re getting very close to planting our garden. This would be a great project to do with our kids.
