The patty melt recipe is truly a simple sandwich recipe that I love dearly. It holds very special memories for me. You see, sometimes during the summer, I would ride along with my Daddy as he visited with his clients. He sold groceries to small independent grocery stores, restaurants, and convenience stores. He had the same customers for decades and being able to visit with them once or twice during the summer was like visiting long lost relatives. I loved it.

While Daddy normally brought his lunch along with him, when my sister or I either one road along, we had a special treat of eating lunch at one of the restaurants Daddy sold to. Most of these would be what you would consider a diner or meat and three type restaurant, owned and managed by a husband and wife where you could usually find staples of fried chicken, meatloaf, steak and gravy, macaroni and cheese, green beans, okra, and banana pudding in a rotation as the daily special.

But, those were classic recipes served at my house or at my Grandmothers, they weren’t nearly different enough from our normal fare. But, on the menu was always a patty melt much to my delight. Some were better than others, but after Daddy realized this was my favorite lunch time treat when I rode along with him, he began making them at home on Saturdays when Mama had to work at the hospital and he had charge of me and my sister. They were glorious. The best I’d ever eaten.

A great American classic, the patty melt recipe is made with hamburger, melted cheese and onions.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon Stone House Seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, or coconut aminos
  • caramelized onions
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 8 slices sandwich bread
  • 4 slices sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices mild Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Divide ground beef into four patties. Heat 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in skillet and add two of the beef patties. Season each beef patty with Stone House Seasoning and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until beef patty has browned on both sides, flipping once after about 5 minutes. Remove cooked beef patties from skillet and onto a plate. Repeat with remaining patties.
  • Wipe skillet clean with paper towels. Spread softened butter onto one side of bread and place onto skillet with the butter side down. Top bread with caramelized onions, then beef patty, and then with cheeses. Top with another slice of bread and spread the top with softened butter. Cooking two at a time, flip the patty melts once one side of the sandwich has reached a golden brown and toast the other, about 2 minutes. Cover with a lid to allow the cheese to melt more quickly, if needed.
  • Remove and serve immediately.
  • Top each of 6 bread slices with some of the onions, a cheese slice, and a burger patty. Top each burger with a cheese slice and a piece of bread. Using a table knife, spread butter over the top and bottom of each sandwich.
  • Heat a 12″ nonstick skillet over medium heat. Working in 3 batches, cook sandwiches, flipping once, until golden brown and hot, about 6 minutes.

I made this with a turkey burger and gluten free bread. Wow! So yummy. All I had was sharp cheddar, but the sandwich came out perfectly with just the one type of cheese. I couldn’t stop eating it! I’ll definitely be making this one again.

This is a terrific sandwich! I cooked my sandwiches in a panini pan; the bread toasted up nicely and the cheese melted perfectly. Thanks so much.

Mama made burgers in the pan like this with the addition of A1 sauce and we called them “sizzle burgers”. Loved them!! You know I’m pinning this!
