Learn how to make your own seedling pots to jump start your gardening! An easy and economical way to start seeds for your garden!
Making your own seedling pots is a great afternoon activity for the entire family and a wonderful way to get children excited about gardening. With a stack of newspapers, a can or water bottle, and a few minutes, you’ll be ready to add your potting soil and seeds before you know it.
Start with a stack of newspapers. Little Buddy chose to start with the comics, of course. He had to spend a few minutes reading them again before we started making our pots.
Tear the paper into long strips.
Place your bottle about 3/4 of the width of the paper strip.
And roll.
Begin folding the end of the paper onto the bottom of the bottle.
Tuck the final pointed corner underneath the other folds for a tight finish.
Fill with your favorite potting soil, plant your seeds according to package directions, and be ready to enjoy your seedlings knowing you’ve not invested a ton of money in seedling pots!
Do you have a gardening tip to share?
these are soooooo cute and a fantastic way to celebrate earth day!!
Oooh, thank you for posting this. Now I gotta go buy dirt!

Love this idea! The sets always seemed pricey and like such a waste. Thanks for the tip 🙂
You are right! They do get so pricey and I love that you can just plant these right into your garden!
I love this Robyn – Allison would really enjoy doing this!!
They work great with herbs and flower seeds, too. We love it.
I remember doing something like this when I was young, except at that time we used disposable dixie cups. This is much more environmentally friendly.
We always made the seedling pots in paper cups at school, too.
I love this post – growing and cooking food is a great way to get kids to eat better (and parents too!)
Thanks, Michelle. We’ve loved making these for years. It’s a great project all the way around!
So fun!
We love making them.
So smart!! Great project for the kids too!!
Absolutely perfect project with kids. Little ones may need a little help with the final folding and tucking.
OMgosh that is such a cute idea. Persephone is always planting plants in the little plastic garden cups.
I bet she would love making these. We have a blast everytime we make them.
A great way to recycle newspapers AND grow seedlings. So cute, Robyn!
It makes a great Earth Day project as well!
