The Power of Banana Sandwiches {Mingle Monday}

We would always argue over them. The banana sandwiches, that is. I was certain there was no other way to eat a banana sandwich than to slather two slices of bread with mayonnaise and fill one side of the bread with carefully sliced pieces from exactly one-half of a banana with no brown specks to be seen. And a glass of Grandmother’s sweet tea was also required to make banana sandwich perfection. On that point, we could agree. His idea of the perfect banana sandwich, the way he’d eaten his sandwich for then 20-something years was with not a miniscule amount of mayonnaise to come near his bread and the banana should be ripe – meaning specks that reminded me of the sprinkling of freckles across my nose (which I hated) were definitely welcome, encouraged even.

Grandmother would carefully make Larry’s sandwich and then make mine, never the other way around since mayonnaise was used on the knife to make my lunch. We sat across Grandmother’s worn, wooden kitchen table having our almost daily lunch discussion on the merits of each of our sandwiches – neither of us giving an inch on why ours was the best.

This past Thursday, in his memory, I decided it was high time I tried my uncle’s favorite sandwich. I cried through each bite that I took, knowing we’d not get to share the ongoing discussion we’d been having for nearly 40 years. I wonder if they eat  banana sandwiches in heaven. If they do, I bet Grandmother had his waiting on him – with a glass of sweet tea.

Thanks so much for all of the sweet emails and messages many of you have sent the last couple of weeks while my uncle was sick and then after he passed away. I appreciate them more than you’ll ever know! We’ll be back to normal with a Mingle Monday feature post the middle of this week! Thanks again for understanding!
