Making Slow Cooker Shredded Beef to have on hand for recipes throughout the week has to be one of my favorite things ever. Well, that and making slow cooker chicken for the same purpose. But, having shredded beef stocked in the refrigerator just makes life easier.

And thankfully, it doesn’t take much thought, time, or energy on my part.

Some days, I have none to spare!

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love cooking. It is like free therapy for me. No need to pay to go sprawl out on someone’s sofa to tell them about my day when I can just head to my kitchen and get reenergized while baking a cake or making pie crust, making homemade bread, or even something as simple as making breakfast or supper for my family.

But some days, especially when our homeschooling day seems to linger from sun-up to sun-down, we’re running from one activity or appointment to another, and I haven’t even attempted to think about what to make for supper, having made shredded beef in the slow cooker is like the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done. It makes me feel like a genius or something.

Ingredients

  • 1 3-4 pound boneless roast beef chuck or round roast
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Stone House Seasoning

Instructions

  • Place roast beef into the insert of your slow cooker. Add beef broth to slow cooker. Pour Worcestershire sauce over the top of roast and sprinkle with Stone House Seasoning.
  • Cook roast in slow cooker for 4 hours on High setting or 6-8 hours on Low.
  • Once roast beef has cooked, remove from slow cooker with tongs into a serving dish. Break apart lightly with two forks and then add back to the gravy in the slow cooker set on warm for another hour.
  • Store shredded beef and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for later use.

We were just going to have roast beef and mashed potatoes with gravy but neither of us were in the mood this evening. Now we have shredded beef to use for the rest of the week. Since I’ve never done shredded beef before, I’ll have to find recipes for it, but I’m looking forward to it.

    Can I freeze the shredded beef once cooked? I have a bottom round roast on the larger side of the suggestion in your recipe (a little over 4 lbs) and there is just me and my husband. Doubt we will be able to finish the beef in enough time for it to remain good in the refrigerator.

  5. I have noticed that when slow cooking beef you don’t sear it most of the time. Do you think searing brings out the flavor a bit more or just an additional unnecessary step? I made the dr. pepper roast beef this week. It was a 3 lb. roast and I cooked it for the recommended 7 hours on low. The meat was dry and tough so I think I should have adjusted the cook time down. Will try another roast recipe this week as I am looking for a go-to slow cooker roast recipe that yields tender, stringy, and flavorful beef. Your photos look amazing…I hope I can replicate! I am happy to have found your website. I found it searching caramel cake recipes! Thank you.

  7. HELP! I’ve made numerous pot roasts in my KitchenAid slow cooker (it’s only three years old) and have not had one shred yet. I saw your recipe and fixed it today. Same cut and weight of meat, same additional ingredients, did seven hours on low. I just pulled the roast from the slow cooker and it won’t shred one bit. Not even close to it. All of the roasts I’ve done in this slow cooker (including this recipe) have all had to be sliced with a knife and have come out a bit dry and tough. What could be wrong? Is it my slow cooker? I’m getting so frustrated and I’m hoping you might have some advice.

    1. I noticed your post is two years old so you probably received an answer already, but thought I would reply in case. It is the cut of meat …I love chuck roast for shredded beef. It will shred easily when cooked in the crock pot or oven but pot roast will not shred and needs to be cooked differently to be moist and tender.

  13. This works great too for wild game. I have some bear meat going now and will use it for fajitas and nachos this week for quick meals on meeting nights. I personally find that you can use any piece of meat pulled out of the freezer. I always sear the meat because I like that taste and sometimes I take a shortcut and just toss a package of onion soup mix on it. I’m going to go look for some of your uses. The only other thing I can think of is to add it to fried rice or barley pilaf, or make some shepard’s pies when I have some leftover veggies. I’ll make some gravy, throw in the shredded meat, a layer of veggies and then top off with some well-seasoned mashed potatoes. I make small ones in pyrex containers that I can heat in the microwave at the office. I love to cook things that can be thrown together in a matter of minutes AND which will have leftovers for lunch another day. Thanks for sharing your methods.

  14. I have a pressure cooker can you please instruct me on time conversions for this recipe. I’ve heard that it is approx one third of the time that it would be to cook the roast in the oven.

  15. Perfect and so easy! This recipe will be a staple at my house! I cooked a small rump roast and only bought 4 rolls. (1 per person) After my son devoured his sandwich, he took off to the store to buy more rolls, and ate a second. I did need to cook the meat for 10 hours because the meat was too tough to shred. If you like to serve it french dip style, my recommendation is to use twice the amount of beef broth. Thank you for sharing this awesome recipe!

  16. Great recipe!!! I made it today and it turned out perfect. I always just threw it in the pot and never thought to use beef broth. I quadrupled the ingredients and let it cook 14 hrs on low with 6 potatoes. I must say i’m impressed and will definitely always make it this way.

  17. I have cooked a 3 lb. outside round roast for 5 hours on high and I still could not pull the beef apart. Do I need to use more liquid? I have a large crock pot so the liquid comes up only a third of the way. I ended up cutting the meat into strips. We really enjoyed the meat and the liquid was delicious.

  19. This was great for me. I was making enchiladas and wanted some shredded beef and this was a great alternative to firing up the smoker! Couple of tweaks: 1)seasoned with montreal and seared on all sides to get it nice and brown before adding to the pot, 2)I added 1-2 tsp of liquid smoke to give it smokier flavor. It was a hit!   20. Did you put the beef directly on the surface of the slow cooker or on a wire insert? My crock pot came with a wire insert that raises the meat off the surface of the cooker. I tried searching online but it was not very helpful. Thanks! Can’t wait to try the recipe!

I am always on the lookout for different recipes to jive up my dishes and I actually found this through your shredded beef nachos recipe (a favorite). This stuff is awesome.   23. I used to be able to buy Montreal seasoning, but no more in Uk I really loved it the taste of it, any suggestions where I can get it ?

    1. You can make it yourself:

      1/4 cup kosher salt
      1 tablespoon pepper
      2 teaspoons dried rosemary
      1 teaspoon granulated garlic
      1 teaspoon onion flakes
      1 teaspoon ground coriander
      1 teaspoon caraway seeds
      1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  24. Are you saying I can use a chuck roast at $9.99 where I live or top raost? Are you referring to top round roast? Top round is not a tender cut of meat.

  25. I have done this a few times now for BBQ shredded beef sandwiches for pot luck dinners at church. I cook beef roast in slow cooker on high for 8 hrs. ( It is a large elk roast). I season with salt and pepper, and add a glass of water to crock pot.
    When roast is done, I take it out and place on a cookie sheet, and using two forks I shreed the roast. Pour the water out of crock pot into a bowl. Place shredded beef back into crock pot, and add a bottle of BBQ sauce. Add water ( juice) to crock pot, just enough to hydrate your BBQ beef. Turn slow cooker on low for about an hour, then serve on hamburger buns. Everyone loves! Add your own different seasoning, as well as your favorite BBQ sauce. The best part is making this your own unique recipe?.

  26. Amazing recipe! And leftovers can be used so many way!
    I used the leftover to make a kale/carrot stir fry! So yummy! Just chop carrots and start with a bit of olive oil. Add leftovers pulled beef after a couple of minutes and when it all gets hot, add kale and put a lid on. 2-4 min later stir kale into the rest of things and turn the heat off. Attaching an image 🙂

  27. About twice a tear all the kids and there families descend upon us. I make this ahead of time and freeze the meat I also freeze the “Gravy in a separate container placed in the pan I freeze in. Since it takes 2 or three of these roasts to feed everyone) Always a huge favorite of the Grand kids who love building their own sliders with pickles onion sand other items.
