Crispy, healthy and delicious, my homemade sweet potato fries are an absolute favorite at my house. Made with only 3 basic ingredients, these fries are ready in minutes. I love to bake them in my oven for larger batches or cook them in my air fryer for an even quicker option.

How to Make the Best Sweet Potato Fries

For this recipe, you’ll need 3 basic ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Sweet Potato – you’ll need 1 sweet potato that has been scrubbed clean
  • Olive Oil – you can also use canola oil or avocado oil
  • Sea Salt – I prefer to use sea salt in this recipe. You can use your favorite type of salt.
  • Cornstarch (Optional) – ½ teaspoon of cornstarch can help to make the outside of the sweet potato fry even crispier. Add it before you add the olive oil to the sweet potatoes, if using.
  • Seasonings (Optional) – I’ve included a few recipe variations you may enjoy later in the recipe. Add any additional seasonings other than salt once the sweet potato fries have cooked. This prevents the seasonings from burning.

Step by Step Instructions

Prep the Sweet Potatoes. Peel, cut off the ends, and then slice the sweet potatoes lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices. Then, turn the slices onto their sides so that they are situated flat side on the cutting board. Slice into uniform-sized fries for even cooking.

Toss the Potatoes. Add the uncooked fries to a baking sheet. Drizzle with the olive oil and add the salt. Toss to make sure that all of the fries are coated.

Cook. I provide two methods for cooking your fries based on your preference.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Preheat the air fryer to 400º F. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Once the air fryer is heated, cook for 8 to 12 minutes, tossing as needed to make sure that all of the fries cook uniformly. Extend the cooking time until all are cooked evenly.

Note: With my air fryer, it takes 10 minutes, but the time will depend on the size of the fries and your particular air fryer.

Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Preheat the oven to 425º F. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once the oven is heated, cook them for 20 minutes. Turn the fries using a metal spatula and cook for 10 – 15 more minutes. Watch the fries closely at this stage as they can burn easily.

Storage and Freezer Instructions

Fries can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and in the freezer for up to 2 months.

To reheat from the refrigerator, place in the oven or air fryer preheated to 400º F for about 5 minutes until crisp.

For frozen fries, reheat in the oven or air fryer preheated to 400º F for about 10 minutes until crisp.

Recipe Variations

Stone House Fries – Sprinkle cooked fries with ¼ teaspoon Stone House Seasoning.

Spicy Sweet Potato Fries – Similar to my spicy sweet potato wedges, you’ll add ¼ – teaspoon each chili powder and black pepper to the cooked fries and toss.

Parmesan Sweet Potato Fries – Sprinkle fries with ¼ cup grated parmesan and ¼ teaspoon Stone House Seasoning right after you remove them from the air fryer or oven.

Cinnamon Sugar Fries – Sprinkle fries with ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1 teaspoon sugar once you remove them from the air fryer or oven.

Here’s my Sweet Potato Fries recipe. I think you’ll love them as much as we do!
