Take the Shot {Mingle Monday}

This weekend, I was able to spend a few minutes with a friend of mine who is a professional photographer. She is a second generation photographer, having learned all of the skills of the trade from her award-winning photographer father. As we were chatting, I mentioned my goal of being able to make better photographs and frustration over having good photos on one day followed by another day full of photos I wouldn’t want to show my dog.

The more we talked, the more her enthusiasm rubbed off on me and I learned to start a photography journal to help me learn more about settings for various situations, what works and what doesn’t.

Isn’t that pure genius?

And you know, Wayne Gretzy wasn’t really talking about photography when he said, “You never make the shot you don’t take.” But, it sure does apply, doesn’t it?

Do you struggle with photography? What has helped you the most?

  1. I’m a complete photography novice. My friend say that my photo taking technique is referred to as “Spray and Pray”. I take a TON of pictures only to discard 98% of them for the perfect few shots.

  2. I do struggle with photography quite a bit, as evidenced by my photo of the BBQ Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potatoes. LOL

  3. I struggle with every single part of it! And don’t even get me started on photo editing. I thought I would die when Picnik closed…I may need to take a continuing Ed class!

  4. Hi there. I’m only new here! :o) I find the best thing to help me with photography is to look at the images of photographers I admire and learn from their techniques.

  5. I struggle with photography every day! Some days I’m really feeling it, some days I’m just…not. I don’t have a DSLR so I feel like I have to try to get everything else right so my photos look okay. I think the staging is the hardest part for me. Thanks for hosting!

  7. I struggle with photography too. Have gotten some great tips at conferences, but I think I need some one-on-one instruction for food photography. Found out there’s a local class next week so I may go to that.
