My husband loves buffalo chicken wings like you wouldn’t believe. However, at times I have to admit that they are not my favorite thing in the world to eat at the moment. There are times I just can’t enjoy myself and eat them because they are messier than I’d like. Even though the flavors are out of this world delicious! That’s why I love this dip so much!

It has all the flavor and deliciousness of buffalo chicken wings, but without all the mess.

What is Buffalo Chicken Dip?

Buffalo Chicken Dip is a creamy, cheesy dip made of cooked chicken, cream cheese, cheese, blue cheese or ranch dressing, buffalo sauce, and a little bit of our homemade Stone House Seasoning for an extra touch. It makes a favorite chicken recipe!

Chicken. You can use chicken that you’ve already cooked, rotisserie chicken or some people also use canned chicken in a pinch.

Buffalo Sauce. For the buffalo sauce, I prefer to use my homemade buffalo sauce since it comes together so easily. Of course you can use store-bought if you prefer.

Cream Cheese. You will use softened cream cheese in this dip. For the cream cheese, you can use a lower-fat cream cheese if you prefer.

Cheese. For the cheese, I highly recommend grating the cheese freshly off of the block as the prepackaged cheeses generally have an ingredient added to the cheese to prevent the cheese shreds from sticking together. This causes the cheese to not melt as nicely in recipes.

Blue Cheese or Ranch Dressing. Here’s where you can customize your dip to your favorite buffalo chicken wing flavors! If you prefer your chicken wings with blue cheese dressing, I recommend using that as the dressing in your buffalo chicken dip. If you prefer the flavor of ranch dressing or if you’ll be making for a party, I highly recommend using ranch dressing. While I love to use my homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing, you can easily use your favorite store-bought dressing as well.

Stone House Seasoning. I make a house seasoning that we call Stone House Seasoning of garlic, salt and pepper that I keep on hand in my kitchen at all times. It adds so much flavor to recipes and makes a huge difference in this buffalo chicken dip I think. If you do not have any on hand, simply use 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder in this recipe.

How to Make Buffalo Chicken Dip

Spread your buffalo chicken dip into an oven-safe serving bowl and top with the reserved cheese.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbly. Remove from the oven and serve warm.

I’ve included instructions on how I make it in the oven as well as how I make it in my slow cooker!

Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe Method

Prepare your slow cooker insert by spraying lightly with non-stick spray. Mix the ingredients exactly as in the oven method, holding the same amount of shredded cheese for the topping of the dip. Pour into the slow cooker insert and top with the remaining shredded cheese and bleu cheese crumbles. Place the lid on the slow cooker and turn on the low or warm setting for up to 4 hours. You can also cook your chicken in the slow cooker, draining any liquid in the insert after chicken is cooked. Shred the cooked chicken with two forks then proceed with the rest of the mixture as directed! So easy and delicious!

What Do You Serve with Buffalo Chicken Dip:

  • Celery Sticks
  • Carrot Sticks
  • Fritos
  • Pita Chips
  • Tortilla Chips

Can You Make Buffalo Chicken Dip Ahead?

You can easily prepare your dip ahead of time to make it even easier! Assemble the dip all the way without baking. Cover with wrap and store in the refrigerator up to 2 days. When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator, remove the wrap and bake as instructed.

Can You Freeze this Dip?

I do not recommend freezing recipes that are made with cheese as the texture of the cheese becomes a bit gritty when frozen and then reheated. If you need to make ahead of time, I would recommend using the refrigerator method mentioned above.

  1. Boy that looks good and made my mouth water till I got to the recipe… I don’t like spicy things. Do you think I could replace the hot sauce with BBQ sauce? I do love wings.

    1. I’ve not tried it with BBQ sauce and not sure how all of these measurements would taste. If you try it, do let me know how it tastes with the BBQ replacement. I’ll work on developing a BBQ Chicken Dip for ya for 2012!

    1. My uncle made the Buffalo Chicken dip on Christmas eve. Needless to say, it didn’t last long. He also used ranch instead of bleu cheese. I’m trying it for NYE and using white cheddar topping instead. Yum yum…Marcia in NC

  2. I LOVE THIS! I make a simpler version of it (and use ranch instead of blue cheese). Its ALWAYS a fave at parties. and now several of my friends are sharing it with their friends at parties. I love it! My fave is to make some- then eat it for lunch with chips. IT has chicken in it- its good for me, right?

  3. Have you tried making it wit ranch dressing instead of bleu cheese? While the hubby loves it no one else is really fond of it but love ranch with their wings. Thanks!

    1. Hi Maggie,
You can easily switch out the bleu cheese with ranch in equal quantities. It tastes delicious with the ranch, too. My husband just prefers the bleu cheese.

  4. Oh man, this looks delicious!!

I’m the same way about mess – it’s to the point where I don’t even like ribs, no matter how succulent they are. Getting sauce all over my face and hands drives me absolutely batty.

You know, another way I avoid the wing sauce fiasco is making buffalo chicken calzones. Give it a try sometime, it’s nom!

  6. I made this and substituted the blue cheese dressing for ranch. I’m also cooking it in the crock pot! Smells Delish! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Such a good dip! My husband always asks me to make it! However, he would eat the whole thing in one sitting!! 🙂 Love it

  8. I make this all the time. Great for football parties and tailgating. I double the recipe and add celery chopped up. Did I mention bottled blue cheese dressing. Yummy and spicy. Make sure to use Frank’s Hot Sauce!

  9. Great recipe, I definitely like this one more than the others I’ve seen online. Would be great to see an estimated calorie count though because I can’t stop eating it!

  10. This is just the recipe I wanted to find now.that football season is here. I’m with you, I have a hard time enjiying chicken wings – chicken skin is gross! But I love the flavors. This recipe will definitely be in my menu soon.

  11. for the buffalo chicken dip, can it be served at room temp once it’s been cooked. thinking of taking to a party, but won’t have a way to keep it oven hot

    1. Hi Lori,
If at all possible, I would recommend keeping the dip warm at least until just before you serve it since it has dairy products and poultry in the dip. Could you make the slow cooker version and then just keep it warm that way until right before serving?

  12. Looks so yummy, Robyn! And perfect timing for late season baseball games, and pre-season football getting started! 🙂

    Thank you!

  13. This dip is absolutely delicious and addictive! The only suggestion I would make is to wait until the last 5-8 minutes to add the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese. I found that leaving it on for the entire cook time made it rather tough and chewy. Other than that, fantastic! 👍🏻

  14. I had never made buffalo dip before so I was a little nervous going in, but this was so easy to make and SO yummy! I added a little less ranch and a little more hot sauce to mine to give it more heat, but it was amazing. Thank you for this recipe!!

  15. I prepared the Buffalo Chicken Dip along with the Cocktail Meatballs (also from this site) yesterday to take to a SEC football game party. Since I did not plan in advance to cook the chicken in the crockpot, I poached 2 chicken breasts, cooled and shredded then proceeded with the recipe. I had more than 1 cup of shredded chicken so I added a little more cream cheese and shredded cheddar cheese but stayed with the same amount of blue cheese dressing (Marie’s Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing). I also prepared the accompanying Buffalo Sauce recipe using Franks Red Hot Sauce. I started with 3/4 cup sauce per the recipe but ended up adding the entire recipe of the Buffalo Sauce to the dish before baking. In hindsight, I would probably not add extra cheddar to the chicken mixture next time. Between what I added to the chicken mixture and what I added to the top, I used about 3/4 of a block of extra sharp cheddar cheese. The dip was a bit oily on top from the cheddar. I baked it in a quiche dish and topped only half with the blue cheese crumbles and served with celery sticks, tortilla chips, and scoops. Thank you Robyn for a tasty & easy recipe for a fun afternoon of college football.
