What is Buffalo Chicken Dip?

Buffalo Chicken Dip is a creamy, cheesy dip made of cooked chicken, cream cheese, cheese, blue cheese or ranch dressing, buffalo sauce, and a little bit of our homemade Stone House Seasoning for an extra touch. It makes a favorite chicken recipe!

Ingredients used to make buffalo chicken dip on a marble surface. Shredded cooked chicken, ranch dressing, buffalo sauce, Stone House Seasoning, cream cheese, and shredded cheese.

Ingredients

Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.

Chicken. You can use leftover cooked shredded chicken, store-bought or homemade rotisserie chicken, or some people also use canned chicken in a pinch.

Buffalo Sauce. For the buffalo sauce, I prefer to use my homemade buffalo sauce since it comes together so easily with minimal ingredients. You can also use your favorite store-bought. When using store-bought sauce, I look for one with the least ingredients.

Cream Cheese. You’ll want to use softened cream cheese in this dip to make it easier to combine this dip. You can use full-fat or lower-fat cream cheese.

Cheese. For the cheese, I highly recommend grating the cheese freshly off of the block as the prepackaged cheeses generally have an ingredient added to the cheese to prevent the cheese shreds from sticking together. This causes the cheese to not melt as nicely in recipes.

Blue Cheese or Ranch Dressing. You can customize your dip to your favorite buffalo chicken wing flavors! If you prefer chicken wings with blue cheese dressing, I recommend using that in your buffalo chicken dip. If you prefer the flavor of ranch dressing or if you’ll be making it for a party, I highly recommend using ranch dressing. While I love to use my homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing, you can also easily use your favorite store-bought dressing.

Stone House Seasoning. I make a house seasoning called Stone House Seasoning of garlic, salt, and pepper that I always keep in my kitchen. It adds so much flavor to recipes and makes a huge difference in this buffalo chicken dip. If you do not have any on hand, simply use 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder in this recipe.

Optional Toppings: You can add additional toppings such as sliced green onions, chopped fresh parsley, and blue cheese crumbles.

I prepared the Buffalo Chicken Dip along with the Cocktail Meatballs (also from this site) yesterday to take to a SEC football game party. Since I did not plan in advance to cook the chicken in the crockpot, I poached 2 chicken breasts, cooled and shredded then proceeded with the recipe. I had more than 1 cup of shredded chicken so I added a little more cream cheese and shredded cheddar cheese but stayed with the same amount of blue cheese dressing (Marie’s Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing). I also prepared the accompanying Buffalo Sauce recipe using Franks Red Hot Sauce. I started with 3/4 cup sauce per the recipe but ended up adding the entire recipe of the Buffalo Sauce to the dish before baking. In hindsight, I would probably not add extra cheddar to the chicken mixture next time. Between what I added to the chicken mixture and what I added to the top, I used about 3/4 of a block of extra sharp cheddar cheese. The dip was a bit oily on top from the cheddar. I baked it in a quiche dish and topped only half with the blue cheese crumbles and served with celery sticks, tortilla chips, and scoops. Thank you Robyn for a tasty & easy recipe for a fun afternoon of college football.

I had never made buffalo dip before so I was a little nervous going in, but this was so easy to make and SO yummy! I added a little less ranch and a little more hot sauce to mine to give it more heat, but it was amazing. Thank you for this recipe!!

This dip is absolutely delicious and addictive! The only suggestion I would make is to wait until the last 5-8 minutes to add the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese. I found that leaving it on for the entire cook time made it rather tough and chewy. Other than that, fantastic! 👍🏻

  5. Looks so yummy, Robyn! And perfect timing for late season baseball games, and pre-season football getting started! 🙂
