We absolutely love tacos. Hard shell, soft shell, stand up shell, not a stand up shell – it really doesn’t matter. A definite favorite is our quick and easy taco recipe that we have on regular repeat at my house! But one thing that I just don’t like to buy are those little packets of taco seasoning. I know, they are easy to use and fast, but I much prefer to make my own homemade taco seasoning so that I know exactly what is in it – and what is not! 🙂

Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

I’ve realized over the years that I am sensitive to some of the preservatives used in store-bought mixes and since I’ve been making my own, I feel so much better! And, I feel better about using my homemade version of mixes in recipes that I serve to family and friends. There is no guessing if the person is sensitive to MSG, or so many of the other chemical-based preservatives and other additives.

Even if you don’t have those concerns, I still think you’ll love this simple, easy, 5-ingredient taco seasoning powerhouse!

It’s just too simple to make not to and it is so easy to make and keep it on hand for a super quick, weeknight supper. I love to mix up a large batch to keep on hand in my pantry. Then, I just sprinkle a bit onto ground beef, chicken, fish, seafood or vegetables for a super quick weeknight favorite. Adjust the amount to your family’s personal preference and dig in!

How to Make Taco Seasoning

To make, you simply add your spices of chili powder, garlic powder, ground cumin, paprika, and salt if you are using to a bowl, container or spice jar. Then, stir well to combine. Store in an airtight container.

It also makes a great housewarming or hostess gift. Just put it in a nice spice jar, along with another jar of spicy brown sugar dry rub, and another of Stone House Seasoning you have a present that your friends will love receiving and using all year long! I know I sure would!

  1. I have been doing this for a few years now, and I LOVE it!! The packets have so much salt, this is not only better for you, but it’s cheaper, too!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this. I make something that requires taco seasoning at least once a week. I think I’ll make a batch of this right now.

    1. I’m so glad it is a recipe you can use! We use it a good bit, too! There’s nothing like a quick taco for lunch or supper or even a taco salad. I hope you enjoy it!

    2. how much taco seasoning mix do you use when you one pound of meat? Loved the idea of making my own mix.

  3. I usually buy the packs of taco seasoning, but it’s so much more economical making it yourself! I’ll be trying your recipe next time we have tacos!

  4. I have been meaning to find myself a recipe for taco seasoning, one that someone I know loves, because it kills me to buy it premade (and surprise, surprise, most of them have added wheat!). Thanks Robyn this is going to be my new go to.

    1. It really depends on your personal tastes. My family enjoys the flavor, so I may use more than you might prefer. For 1 pound of ground beef, I would use about 1 teaspoon of taco seasoning.

  5. I like being able to control the salt. Thanks again for another great suggestion! Pinning it!!

  6. Robyn, you are SO right about this – why would I ever buy that stuff in the packet again? I’m officially designating one of my mason jars as Taco Seasoning Jar.

  7. thank you so much for breaking this down, I always buy the pre made mixes but knew there was always something better, and better even since I already have the ingredients!

    1. I never use packaged either – I enjoy the freshness of this – and it’s so simple! You can adjust the “heat” according to your preference, Donna, to make it just right for your family. I hope you enjoy this as much as my family does! Thanks! xo

  8. This is excellent mix not only is it simple but as someone else mentioned it is full of salt,I worked as a chef for many years cooking for seniors whom are on low salt diets no good for anyone, we did a lot of research , and with a good combination of fresh herbs we do not need salt,as you did here,my compliments to you.

  9. sorry after reading my comment I see some mistakes it is not full of salt and also did not rate this sorry

  10.  I tried this taco seasoning mix I absolutely loved it I will never buy another packet of taco seasoning mix again when I browned the meat I added around a half a cup of water And a little bit of cornstarch for thickening when I put the seasoning mix in it was wonderful

    1. Thanks so much, Debbie! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. It definitely spoils you from ever using a packet, doesn’t it?!

  11. I’ve been using this for a while & thought I’d already rated it. Apparently not!! 😳. Anyway, this stuff is totally awesome! We all love it & it’s one of the few recipes both my grandsons (16 & 12) agree on! Thank you for posting a more healthy & inexpensive alternative to packaged mix. After the first time I’ve started making it in bulk!! 😀

    1. Aww! I’m so thrilled that your grandson’s love it. My son (also 16) is a huge taco (everything!) fan, so I totally understand the make it in bulk situation! xo

    2. Most packets of taco seasoning mix contain 1 oz. or 2 tablespoons of seasoning, but others may have different amounts. My recipe makes 5 tablespoons of taco seasoning. You can adjust the amount of the taco seasoning in my recipe according to the brand taco seasoning mix specified in the recipe or for the brand you would ordinarily use. Hope this helps!

  12. Would this be good for a fellow who must be gluten-free? Bro-in-law can’t do gluten but loves his tacos

  13. Is the “chili powder” the mix of oregano, chile, onion, cumin etc that you buy premixed or is it one ingredient: ground dried chiles?

    1. Mary,
I use the premixed bottle of chili powder that is a mixture of chili peppers, oregano, and salt. Hope you like this recipe!

  14. Thank you so very much for this recipe. My son in law has Celiac, along with several of our friends, this will
be just perfect for them. I’m going to make up some and put it in a jar for our daughter to have in her kitchen.
It will definitely save her money as the gluten free
mix is quite expensive. Your recipes have been a huge
    success everyime I make them!

    1. Ginny,
I have friends who have Celiac and know how hard it can be to make sure foods are gluten free. I’m so glad you can use this for him. Thanks so much for you sweet comment! xo

  15. How much of this is equivalent to a packaged mix? My hubby recently had a heart attack and we are looking to reduce sodium in our diet and this will help with that. I use taco seasoning in so many things! (Do you have recipe for onion soup mix? I haven’t had a chance to search for one yet!)

    1. Denise,
This recipe makes 5 tablespoons. I’m sorry but I don’t have a recipe for onion soup mix. I hope your husband has a speedy recovery and is soon back to good health.

  16. I love the flavor! Thank you for sharing; I made a quadruple batch.

Some of my recipes have a quantity for taco seasoning, and others simply say “one package”. What would you suggest as the amount to use of your recipe when the latter is listed? I’m assuming the fact that your recipe has no fillers will complicate the answer.

    1. Jeri,
My recipe makes 5 tablespoons of taco seasoning. Different brands of taco seasoning mix contain different amounts in their package. You can adjust the amount of the taco seasoning in my recipe according to the brand taco seasoning mix specified in the recipe or for the brand you would ordinarily use. Hope this helps!

  17. I tried this recipe tonight and we love it. I did add just a little more cumin, but other than that it was great. No more prepackaged taco seasoning for us!

  18. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I wasn’t able to buy taco seasoning when I lived in South Korea for five years. This was my go-to recipe for taco seasoning. Even though I now live in a country where I can buy it, I still prefer this recipe to store bought. Thank you!

    1. Arlene, I got the large jars and the smaller ones with the label you can place on top of the jars at Amazon. There is a link in the post “nice spice jar” for the large one. I love these jars.

  19. Love this recipe. Simple n can be easily made with pantry items. I marinated shrimp n it was the best shrimp tacos I ever had. So flavorful.
